Shimano Levers Cantilever to V brake

When changing modes, is that red plastic triangle shaped retainer removable to allow the cable seat to slide past it? Does it need to be in a certain position to allow removal?

Dave,

Thanks for the link to the service documents but as usual they are no help. They warn you to select the proper hole for cantilever or v-brake but they don't tell you the procedure for moving the holder to the other position. I guess you're suppose to destroy one in order to learn how it works.
