Hard to turn grip shift
#1
I just got my son a new bike that came with grip shifter's. He says they are to hard to turn as you progress from 1st up towards 6th. It's easy coming down from 6th to 1st.
It's only a rear derailleur with Shimano SIS 6 speed printed on it. The grip shift is generic.(doesn't shay shimano or anything)
Is there an adjustment to ease up the force required to turn the grip to upshift?
Since it's new, i'm guessing the shift cable housing is lined to reduce friction already?

There's no adjustment for this and it might just be the way it is. But there are a few things you can check.
- Any kinks in the cable?
- Is the grip pushed up really tight against the shifter? A tiny gap might help
- Try dripping a little chain lube into the cable housing (if the shop didn't grease it when they assembled the bike it could make it stiffer, but they usually do.)
Lower end grip shifters can be very stiff unfortunately.

bought a bike recently for my wife, with the same problem. Took derailleur apart, reset high and low gears, oiled cable housing, no avail. Turns out it was the derailleur itself, it was slightly off true. Straightened it a few mm at a time by twisting it and hey presto! gears now change, no problem!
