what is considered light weight for a road bike? I overheard a guy in the local bike shop saying his bike weighed 22lbs.

It depends on who you ask, eorta. To some, 22 would be light and 25 heavy. To others, 22 is heavy and 19 is light.
In September, I bought a 2011 model Trek 2.1 in 54cm. $1300, 105 parts. Fresh-build weight was just under 23 on my fish scale. Swapping the Bontrager SSR wheelset for a Bonty Race set and new inner tubes shaved it to 22.5. Maybe that is why nobody believes my fish stories.

With enough Mad Money (wife doesn't know), I can get it down to 22 for another $110. For another $19.72 (with tax) I can shave off another 60 grams. See? It's easy! Wink

My Giant Defy 2 is 18 lbs from the factory. It has an aluminum frame and carbon fork and seat post. I don't know what your body fat index is or the reason you are concerned about the bike weight, but sometimes its cheaper, easier and healthier to loose the weight off your body than from the bike as the total weight of bike and rider will equal, either way. If you are really athletic and you can't afford to loose any weight without causing other medical problems, then taking it off the bike is your next best thing.

I think you'd want to check out this forum http://weightweenies.starbike.com/forum/ if you're interested in the lightest bike possible. These guys swap out parts and cut down on everything to get the lightest bike they possibly can.

I read a yehuda moon comic (you can read them below by clicking on the picture) they had a (fake) carbon transparent road bike. Smile Personally the more lighter it is the easier it breaks?!? Sorry had to say something Wink With the above said the heavier the bike the harder the work out which in turn will get you in shape (loose weight) for the lighter bikes. That is my common sense kicking in which I really did not take in consideration of the math involved, so that is all I can say.
Good maintenance to your Bike, can make it like the wheels are, true and smooth!

Yep! That's why I do most of my workouts on my hybrid rather than the road bike. Need to loose about 5 more pounds before I start to worry about taking it off the bike.
