Order of installation of new drivetrain?
#1
Hello all!

I am planning on upgrading the drivetrain on my mountain bike soon and was wondering what the best order it is to install the new parts. I will be going from a 8 speed Shimano mish mash to a 9 speed Shimano SLX set up. The new parts will be the cassette, the front and rear derailleurs, the crankset/ BB, chain, and new shifters. ( my current set up has integrated shift/brake levers- so I will install new brake levers as well). I have the tools I need to do the work, but I just need to know how to proceed. Thanks a bunch!

I've read it before. I was gifted the SLX set up and it would be a definite improvement over my current drivetrain, therefore, I would like to take advantage of it.

It really doesn't matter on the order but obviously you won't fit the chain until the chainset is on. Smile
You need to remove all the appropriate bits first and the grips from the bars.
Then I would start with bottom bracket and chainset then cassette.
Next- derailleurs, shifters, brake levers.
Set the hight and line up the front derailleur with respect to the chainset and then fit the chain.
Position and fix the shifters, brake levers and install the cables.
Now you should be able to turn the cranks and tune the derailleurs.
When satisfied all is right, fit the bar grips.
Ride hard or ride home alone!

Thanks.. I was thinking along those lines, but I was exactly sure when to install the cabling. Makes sense the way you laid it out.
