New Trek 7.2 FX Chain Slips
#1
I recently bought a brand new Trek 7.2 FX. In certain gears, when going uphill, the chain slips. I have read about how a new bike may experience stretching of the chain and shifter cables. What I want to know is: Should I have the bike adjusted or upgrade to the 7.3 or 7.5 FX model? If this is just a one time or rare tune up problem then I will keep the 7.2, but if this just happens more often to bikes with lower grade components, then I may consider upgrading. Please let me know your opinion.

Thanks,

J

Unless it's something that you are causing, your chain shouldn't slip on a new bike. I would take it back to the LBS and have them take a look at it. I have had that happen to me a time or two during climbs, but that was because I was shifting while in the downstroke between the 90 and 180 degree position.

In certain gears, when going uphill, the chain slips. Not changing gears. Is the hardware cheap, defective or does it just need to be tuned?

What group set does the bike have. I looked at the Trek web site (US market) yesterday and the only thing that I found with a 7.2 in the name was one of their tri bikes but it did not have an FX on it. I looked at the FX series and it does not show a 7.2. Is this a European model?

Pretty much anything sold through a bike shop has decent group sets, even on the lower priced bikes. I think that it is just a matter of an adjustment, but since it's new, you may want to have the LBS do it only for the fact that the bike is still under warranty.
