Need to file derailleur/mech hanger
#1
Yo fellas, not posted on here for a while. It's nice to be back!

I have an issue with my rear derailleur hanger. When the frame was being stored something must have rolled over the hanger and snapped it.

I've bought the closest replacement I could find and it's almost identical but does need filing slightly for a perfect fit.

My plan is to obtain a suitable metal file, mark the outline of the old hanger against the new one, clamp the new hanger in my vice & begin filing.

Can anyone tell me what sort of file I need specifically to do this? And is my method above the best way to do it?

Thanks very kindly

Si

I have these:
http://www.amazon.com/Nicholson-General-Purpose-Without-3-Piece/dp/B000TDFSYG/
and have had them for 20 years.

Start with the mill bastard, then as you get close, go to the slim taper.

Thanks Nige.

I'm very immature because I laughed when you used the word Bastard!

I wonder if I could get these in the UK? I'll have a look now.

Will I need a 'file card' brush to use with them?

Cheers

If the metal you are filing is not steel or iron, yes you will need a file card. Aluminum gums up files fast.

Its nice to have extra tools but why not buy the correct hanger to start with?

Hi Painkiller, with some looking in the right direction, I have never not come across a correct replacement hanger. They are there and this is a hard way to correct the problem.

Thanks mate,

I've already bought the hanger of course & I'm positive it's the nearest one to mine. Just needs a little filing down to be perfect. I'm sure this isn't unusual! I'll let you and everyone else know how I get on with this annoying issue.

Cheers
