What is the purpose of the ferrule?

I can't find a clear answer online. Thanks!

Your cable bosses have a slit to make assembly faster and easier. the ferrule makes up for the slit. it helps keep the cable in line, some have a seal to help keep dirt out. It also helps keep the outer casing from being gouged by the slit during repeated compression

there are two on each cable housing. each of which keep the inner housing from being pulled into the device
