Frame Dropout Help, Claud butler Carabo
#1
Hi, long time no post.

I have picked up this bike "Claud butler Carabo" its from about 1997ish, some components have been changed.

The Dropouts to me look like that the wrong hanger has been used or it was originally the non-removable type and someone cut it off. Any opinions will be helpful.

Drive side, note the three 3mm holes anyone any clue if this are for the correct hanger?

Non-drive side.

as you can see the mech will not shift correctly in this position, allow I have not tested and I did not test it when I bought it as the bike was not ridable.

Yea that's a good guess for anyone. Maybe they were using the frame as a pixie fixie and smashed the bolt on the drive side?? Then it was converted back to the original style.

Darren - try that. My guess is either a #1 or a #117. They can help you narrow it down.

Darren - did you get it sorted?
For clarity to others that might have this problem, I should have gone into more detail from the beginning. Someone did a "just make it work" job on this bike and did it poorly.
The Shimano Altus "direct mount" derailluer in the photo might work had the hanger been there to attach it to. Instead, someone attached it to a 'bolt-on' hanger that is designed for inexpensive bikes with Horizontal Dropouts. This frame has Vertical Dropouts so, it is 90 degrees off, now! Usually found on mass-market bikes with bolt-on wheels. Not only is it uglier than sin... it just plain will not work correctly.
This frame requires a specific Hanger and that hanger will support a Direct Mount rear derailluer - the type that attaches via a central pivot bolt through the actual drlr. Google a Shimano Alivio or a SRAM X5 for examples.

Bill. Glad I could turn you on to Wheels Mfg! Been doing business with them and using thier stuff for almost 25 years now. I highly recommend them!

Yea I had one bike a guy brought to me and couldn't for the life of me figure out this similar problem! (Just knew at the time it was beyond my skills to be honest). He went to a major shop in Buffalo that took care of it.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

I think I have sorted it. I bought a hanger that was close to size and modified it. I am still to Finnish the bike, will let you's know how it goes once done.
