How to remove wheel with old Sturmey Archer 3-Speed hub
#1
I have a very old Dahon California folding bike with a 3-speed Sturmey Archer hub. I need to replace the rear wheel inner tube. I looked all over the internet, but can't find instructions for this. Everything is too new! If I take the nut off the side with out the chain, can I just ease the wheel off? Is there a way to release the chain that I can't find? I would really appreciate any advise, as I would prefer to do it myself, not take it to a store! I think it dates from about 1983.

Where the cable meets the little chain, there should be a smooth barrel with a small, ridged wheel. You can unscrew the barrel and the cable and chain will detach so you can remove the wheel.

Take note of the washers and nuts that hold the axle to the frame before you remove the wheel. You want to get them back in the same place, order, and orientation.

Just in case you're referring to the main drive train chain...loosen the axle bolts and slide the wheel forward ot take tension off the chain. Slip the chain off of the rear or front chainring and then slide the wheel out of the frame completely.

Thank you! I did it!! Even had the right size wrench, a minor miracle. Now I have to go to the park to re-adjust the gears, but they slip around all the time anyway, so I'm used to doing that. Thanks again.
