New mavic wheel problem
#1
Hi guys- I don't know if anyone will be able to help me but here goes...

I have an old (2006) road bike which had mavic ksyrium equipe wheels on it. the width of the dropouts on the back is 130mm.

anyway, my rim brake surface got a kink in it so i got some "new" old wheels off ebay which are a slightly better model, ksyrium SL ssc.

only problem is that when i went to install the rear wheel i noticed it wasn't sitting right in the frame. on investigation i found that the axle width of this wheel appears to be 135mm. (the one on the old wheel is definitely 130mm and fits the frame perfectly).

my questions:

1. is this possible? the front wheel seems to fit perfectly. is it possible that the seller has put the axle in incorrectly making it sit 5mm out? or is it just that they come in 135mm and it's the wrong size for my bike?

2. if it is the wrong size, can i swap the axle in the new wheel for the one in my old wheel? are they standardized and will fit any mavic (ksyrium) hub?

3. if i do that will i have to re-dish the wheel? or would it be ok (taking 2.5mm off each end so that the rim is still centred)??

anyway, if anyone knows the answers to these questions i'd be most grateful.

cheers

The front wheel OLD has not changed much over the last decades, my new road bike's front wheel fits all of my bikes. The rear however... 130mm is (afaik still) standard for road bikes (the new 11spd might have changed that, I don't know). So having 135mm is a bit strange. There are some road (well, cyclocross) frames that have a 135mm rear triangle spacing, so Mavic might have hubs for that.
Another possibility is that the seller could have put a spacer on the axle... (check that first)

For that read the Mavic Techdocs, they have pdfs online that detail all of the maintenance work that can be done on their wheels.
It might be problematic because you need to get the bearings off (I guess...) as they do not use cup and cone bearings but rather the cylindrical type (often called "sealed" bearings)

That entirely depends on how the drive side looks... It might very well be that the cassette is already as far out as it can be without interfering with the frame. Then, you have to redish the wheel - the question is if this is advisable, the spoke angle will be quite sharp and I am not sure if this would still make for a really reliable wheel.

Oh, and 2006 is not an "old" bike. Many here have older ones...

Hmmm..... Not sure as there are many variables. First as was suggested look to see if there is a 5mm spacer inboard of the lock nuts that can be removed. If the spacers are there you may be able to use your old spacers, axle etc. to get it to 130mm. Check the measurements of the hub itself not the axle.

You can check Mavic website to see if they indeed make 135mm wheels.
If all checks out and you have a STEEL frame bike you can gently stretch the frame to fit the wheel in. This is sometimes done with old bikes as the hub dimensions have changed.

BTW my bike is a 1985 Fuji and many here have great vintage bikes that are older.........

Thanks guys- i took it apart and found the problem: seller had put a washer on the outside instead of under the freehub. wheel sits perfectly in the middle now.

cheers
