Basic Spokes Question

I broke two spokes and resolved to fix them myself.

I removed the cassette on the wheel, removed the broken spokes, thread the new spokes through the hub and the other spokes, but I cannot get the new spokes to screw into the old nipples. Or, rather, I can get them started, but there is a point past which my spoke wrench will not turn.

I am starting to think that I need to replace the old nipple with the new nipple that came with the new spoke.

Now that I type it out it seems obvious, but is this right? New spokes will not always go into old nipple?

Not all spokes have the same threading or end diameter, and in any case it's always good practice to replace spoke and nipple together. New spokes should be sold with the nipple.

Furthermore; nipples are soft material, and deform when used by design. They should ALWAYS be replaced, and not reused.

When you replace a spoke; loosen all the other spokes by at least one full turn, then tension, true, stress relieve, repeat until there is no need to true after stress relieving.

Given you had spoke failure, it is most like that the original wheel build was not to high enough tension.

Correct, when you break 2 spokes more are likely to break, with the possible exception of one that break due to an accident.

My rule is break one, replace it; break two, replace all.
