Hi,

I am converting a MTB with 26" wheels to 700c. I live in the UK and do not go off road, but would like a bike to ride on canal tow paths (some of which can be a "little rough". All is OK, have swooped out the front forks to a rigid type (with the correct bosses for mounting a V brake onto a 700c wheel) - but....i would prefer too fit V brakes on the rear, and the bosses are in the wrong place. I know that Mavic used to do a converter, but cannot find one anywhere. Has anyone else done this? and what did you do?

I am using these on a 559 to 590 conversion:

they only provide 16mm, not enough for 559 to 622; which is 31.5mm radial difference.

I would probably put a caliper brake on instead, it would be easier.

Hi Nigel,

Many thanks for the great information. Will probably go with calipers as you suggested - will still need standard drop on front and deeper drop on rear.

Although... have found the Freeradical adapter plate from a UK supplier (http://practicalcycles.com/products/188742--xtracycle-700c-v-brake-adaptor.aspx) even if they are taking the piss when it comes to price.

I have a spare deep drop Miche caliper, think I will try that first then make a final decision.

Hi Kevan;

To be clearer than I was, I would stick with the V-brake on the front, and caliper on the back. You will need appropriate levers for each end. I have done a couple bikes with mismatched brakes, work great. One was the Black GT, it has a V-brake on the front and a U-brake on the back. OEM spec was a cantilever on the front and a U-brake on the back.
