Replacing LHS Tiagra Double Shifter
When I downshift from the large outside cog to the smaller inside cog the shifter "snaps" into place ie. it is not smooth but feels as though it is under tension and then the tension is released which results in the "snapping" sound. Up shifting is not a problem. The sound comes from the shifter - not the front cog.
According to the bike shop the fault is with the shifter itself and I will need to replace it.

I notice I can buy a shifter on ebay for a reasonable price and was wondering what is involved in the installation. Is anybody aware of an easy to follow self help guide? Also what tools are required ie. are specialised tools needed?

tools: only thing special is something that can cut the cables. Metric hex key, pliers and screwdriver.

Search for "Shimano Techdocs" and the specific model of your shifter with Google or similar. Tiagra is a brand of Shimano's, and like almost everyone of their brands, the item changes every year or two.

Personally, I would do a little more careful investigation of your shifter before replacing. They can be rebuilt, check youtube.

Can the existing cables be reused or do they also need to be replaced?

RE: Replacing LHS Tiagra Double Shifter
most likely replaced.

cables represent way less than 25% of the total cost - and the ends will be frayed - very difficult to push through the housings, and potentially damaging the housings. If the housings look good, I would not replace the housings, but I would put a couple drops of TriFlow in the end before pushing the new cable through.
