Help with cassette type
#1
I have old vintage road bike from I think 80th. Unknown manufacturer or model. I am trying to replace cassette, but I cannot find this type on internet. Please help. Cassette is 5 speeds with internal diameter 33-35mm. Cassette Hub has 9 teeth equal to each other. 4 speeds are fixed together and screwed by 5th on the top of the hub. Wheels are 27x1 1/4.
Thanks for help!

That is a uniglide styled freehub body.

It's just like a Hyperglide, except instead of a single lockring, the top cogs act as the lockrings instead.

You will need two chainwhips, one to hold the cassette and another to screw the cogs on the freehub body.

Thanks for reply! I had open it by 2 chainwhips with red arms as you see on the picture with wheel. I want to replace the cassette. Do you know how to find exact part number or website link with it? Thank you very much!

P.S. I had looked to Uniglide before your reply, but I could not find this cassette. If you know, please help.

This is a vintage product. There are a few floating around but I wouldn't expect them to be cheap.

Here are some examples.

Thank you so much for your help!!! I will review it. May I ask you, if my wheel hub can be replaced with morden hub on my 27" wheel, so I can use modem cassette or freewheel? Or better to replace wheel with 700? What model number for hub and cassette or whole wheel will be? Sorry for many questions. Thanks.

There are two types.

One is the classic uniglide freehub body. It doesn't have any threads on the inside. Then the other type which is cross-compatible between uniglide and hyperglide because it has threads on the outside—and on the inside (for an HG lockring). So it would depend on which one you specifically have.

You may also be able to remove the freehub body with a 10mm hex socket, allen wrench, or T Handle hex wrench. After taking the hub apart, loosening the cones, removing the axle and all the bearings. You would insert the hex from the front side of the freehub body and it turns counter-clockwise to loosen because it has a normal right hand thread.

If you can remove it, check the underside of the freehub body, and then the interface of the hub where it came off. Possibly, you can then match it with a newer hyperglide freehub body that uses the same Shimano freehub body interface.

They should use the same fixing bolt, so you'd only need the newer freehub body.

Below are examples.

Dear Bike Ninja,
Could you tell me if I can use use 6 speed uniglide shown in link to make 5 speed from my old one as I can use 5 speed screws? Also can I install 6 speed instead of 5 speed cassette? Thanks

I don't believe the uniglide freehub bodies are any different size.

The six speed cassettes simply use smaller spacers to accommodate for the extra cog.

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html#uniglide

Apparently, they went on with the speed simply making them continuously narrower as suggested.
