This started on and off for 20 minutes starting my journey then wheel didn't engage at all. Back sprocket rotates with chain as normal. Sprocket was renewed recently.

Ok,
That sounds like the freehub/freewheel assembly is not grabbing like it is supposed to and/or when it was replaced something was not put on correctly. If you have it under warranty and take it back I would do so for repair or replacement of the bicycle. Now if that is not the case you may be looking at replacing the freewheel/freehub assembly. I do asked you to wait and see if there are others that will comment here on this. It may be something more simple then what I have said.

Rear cassette doesn't click in and keeps turning so back wheel doesn't engage. Had to take the bus today. Anyone know what this could be and if there is a cheap fix?

It does sound like the freehub body is gummed up. First I'd recommend removing the cassette as shown here: http://bicycletutor.com/replace-cassette-cluster/

Then check the freehub by hand to see if it is engaging. Freehubs are difficult to overhaul and usually need replacing if worn. You can replace it yourself if you have the right tools, as demonstrated here: http://bicycletutor.com/freehub-body/
