Rear tire not engaging

I recently bought a used bicycle at a flea market.

The bike is old, but it pedaled smoothly when I tested it at the market.
However; upon getting home, the rear wheel would not engage... the chain will spin (normally) when pressure is applied from the pedal, but the chain will not engage the wheel.

I've adjusted the rear derailleur, thinking it would somehow affect the issue, but it didn't. There doesn't seem to be anything visibly wrong with the chain/gears/etc... I can shift the bike through all gears freely, but the wheel isn't spinning. What gives?

Does anyone have a simple solution to this problem?

Sounds like your rear cassette is gum up take it off and clean it then grease it good reinstall should be go to go after that. If not you may need a new cassette for it.
