Help with Installing a Front Derailleur
#1
Hi,

I have some questions that I need help with this issue.

Do i need to take the chain apart to install a Front Derailleur?

If so which chain link to I take it apart?

If I do not need to do this, do I need to snap open the front derailleur somehow?

Any Help appreciated.

Thanks

Tim

The front dérailleur I have on both my bikes have a bolt on the bottom where the chain goes through to open it up and put chain through.

Otherwise you will need to break open the chain( tool needed) and install a master link. Make sure the closed end faces the direction of chain travel.

Look up Alex's video on chain replacement.

Look up Alex's video on chain replacement.

If you mean a "master" link of the type called a "split link":-
http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-KMC-KMC-Universal-Joining-Link-9.4-for-1-8-Inch-Chains--Each-18115.htm

Then these should not be used on derailleur bikes
The link with an open end clip is used on single speed bikes (1/8" chain).

A "quick link" can be fitted such as :-
http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-Sachs-Sram--Sachs-Power-Link-for-7--8-Speed-Chains-for-PC48-58-68--Silver--Pack-Of-3-Pairs-4472.htm

These fit either way round and is shown in the second half of Alex's video.

Yes , 10-4 to that. As a motorcycle rider I was not familiar with this type of link. Good thing Alex has these videos to refer too.
PS it may be possible that if the dérailleur does not open than you may already have a master link in your chain. Look it over carefully.
