Where does this spool go?
#1
I am working on a High Plains Mountain bike. Appears to be in the 80's. I cant see where this one small spool goes. The two bigger ones are intact with the chin snaking through. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I wish I could just find a diagram. That would help tremendously. Here are some pictures. A chain guide would be awesome in pdf or something.
Thanks,
SchwinnMonkey

that is not an 80's derailluer. if the spool as you call it goes with it it would be where the red one is. you must have a pile of parts and getting them mixed up. the rear freewheel is not and 80's cogset either
not even close. you might want to post more pics of the bike and other components to pin point the year closer. you are off by 20 yrs. at least. By the amount of paint chipped by the axle nut and lack of rust there and in the lug threads it is much much newer of a bike

the chain is threaded through the derailleur incorrectly. And given the positioning of the derailleur - I suspect that it was taken apart, and not put back together correctly. The little black wheel does not got with that model of derailleur; which came with two large wheels.

I would purchase this: http://www.amazon.com/Shimano-Tourney-TX55-Speed-Derailleur/dp/B003ZM9RDQ/ and a new chain and start over.

Here is a diagram/picture: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/ca/Derailleur_Bicycle_Drivetrain.svg/300px-Derailleur_Bicycle_Drivetrain.svg.png

Also read ALL of this: http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/chain-installation-derailleur-bikes

I use cable ties to hold the RD up while assembling the chain so that there is no tension on chain during assembly of the master link. I use SRAM or KMC chains and master links.

I really thank everyone for helping me. I indeed had a pulley from another bike entirely. I did get the chain put back on however its not shifting right. Nfmisso is correct however resell for the bike is maybe 50 bucks. Its all good though.

Thanks again!

Around San Jose; a High Plains Mountain bike in good condition would go for over $100-
